Habitat Summary for element in Georgia: Wet hardwoods, cane, hardwood slopes with cane

Description

Wing span is 2.9 - 3.5 cm.  Upperside is dark brown.  Underside is rusty brown with light spots.  Yellow wing veins.  Underside of hindwing has a indistinct yellow streak.

Survey Recommendations

Surveys in the field and in literature required to assess where historic and current populations may be located.  It is thought that the adults may be crepuscular.

Range

Populations are spotty from Virginia to Georgia.

Threats

Wetland conversion and pesticide use.

SWAP 2025 Threat Matrix

Threat 1 Threat 2 Threat 3
General Threat Natural system modifications Pollution Natural system modifications
Specific Threat Dams & water management/use Air-borne pollutants Fire & fire suppression

Georgia Conservation Status

Species needs further assessment.

Conservation Management Recommendations

Maintaining native habitats.  Protecting and managing for switch cane.

SWAP 2025 Conservation Actions:

  • Action 1: Modify prescribed fire regime to improve habitat
  • Action 2: Complete a distributional survey to assess current range, conservation status or to identify best populations
  • Action 3: Reassess the conservation status of SGCN before the next revision of Georgia's State Wildlife Action Plan
  • Action 4: Reduce the impacts of pesticides on terrestrial invertebrates through education and alternative management practices
  • Action 5: Utilize a Butterfly Atlas to document ranges and survey needs for butterfly SGCN
