Pale silvery-gray thallus with smudgy dark ascomata, variably shaped; no warm tones, no photobiont evident; MICROSCOPY: spores rarely seen; FIELD ID: pale, translucent thalli on twigs with smudgy lirellae are usually this species, but dissection needed to confirm lack of photobiont
