Pale green thallus with short brown isidia, numerous short black cilia at lobe edges with distinct bulbs at bases (sometimes difficult to see in the field); lobes branching to form rounded loops which at a glance resemble disks; undersides brown throughout, not blackened away from lobe tips; CHEMISTRY: medulla K-, C+ pink (gyrophoric acid); FIELD ID: delicate, lacy thalli with isidia & brown undersides, with confirmation of cilia morphology (requires good hand lens & good eyes)
Bulbothrix laevigatula has black underside & C+ red medulla; B. isidiza has K+ red medulla & usually more robust lobes
