Description

Pale thallus with stipitate black apothecia; disks disintegrating into a powdery black mazaedium; tiny stalk about 0.1 mm, topped by cup of approximately same length; MICROSCOPY: spores brown to greenish, 2-celled, 12-15 x 5-7 µm; FIELD ID: the confusing array of stubble lichens & unlichenized fungi require dissection to sort out

Similar Species

Calicium salicinum has brown pruina on underside of apothecium & small, ornamented spores; C. hyperelloides & C. lenticulare have stalks over 0.5 mm tall, & former is KC+ orange, the latter KC- but with a white-rimmed disk; C. trabinellum has a yellow-pruinose disk; other stubbles have simple spores or persistent hymenia
