Habitat Summary for element in Georgia: Wet and dry forests and woodlands

Description

Small foliose lichen with pale gray thallus, lobes adnate to bark surface; lobe tips with white maculae; inner part of most thalli with scattered groups of short to moderate-length, simple to branched isidia; CHEMISTRY: medulla K-, KC+ pink, C-, PD+ red (protocetraric acid); FIELD ID: rarity leads to ID by process of elimination, clues being small size, pale coloration, lack of cilia, scattered isidia & southerly distribution, confirmed with positive KC test

Similar Species

Bulbothrix isidiza looks similar, but it has short cilia with bulbous bases (sometimes different to see in the field) & different medullar chemistry; Punctelia rudecta is often growing on the same trees, has isidia, & the white pseudocyphellae can look like maculae, but its isidia form in groups within pseudocyphellae & it usually appears darker than the present species; multiple isidiate Parmotrema species also occur in the same areas, but they are larger, immaculate, & some have cilia
