Description

Pale, areolate-rimose thallus with black apothecia; CHEMISTRY: thallus K+ yellow (atranorin); MICROSCOPY: hypothecium dark brown, epihymenium brown (reported to be green, rarely), paraphyses not much expanded at tips, spores simple, colorless, not halonate, about 12-15 x 5-7.5 µm; FIELD ID not possible, dissection required

Similar Species

Many other saxicolous crusts with black apothecia could be confused with this species; the pale thallus & chemistry are early clues, confirmed with characteristics of apothecia & spores, though some may require thin-layer chromatography to separate from Lecidella species
