Pale or indistinct thallus with long, delicate stalks holding tiny, globose apothecia; MICROSCOPY: spores brown, 1-celled; FIELD ID: stubble lichens almost always require dissection & examination of spores to ID

Chaenotheca brunneola has broad, shallow capitula; Calicium species have 2-celled spores; Chaenothecopsis species have a persistent hymenium, not a true mazaedium, though the surface of the disk can appear powdery
