Description

Green or brown primary thallus of variable squamules (1-3 mm long); podetia 1-2 cm tall, ending in shallow cups, sometimes abundantly proliferating at edges, with brown apothecia; podetia coarsely sorediate or in places with a pebbled surface; CHEMISTRY: K-, PD-/+ red, UV+ bright blue-white; FIELD ID possible, with careful observation & field UV test

Similar Species

Cladonia fimbriata is a similar cupped species, but its podetia are much taller, its soredia finer & its thallus is UV-; C. pyxidata has no soredia on cups, just green rounded areoles or small squamules; other species in the C. chlorophaea group are rare in Ga. & went unrecorded in data-gathering for the atlas project
