Description

Pale green primary thallus of small, rounded squamules; podetia 1-2 cm tall, sinewy, corticate, occasionally squamulose, often branched near top; pale brown turbinate apothecia at tips; FIELD ID: usually unmistakable, but keep small squamule size in mind

Cladonia subcariosa has narrower, darker apothecia and larger, darker squamules

Roadsides, upland forests; substrates: mostly soil (79%); 6% on hardwood bark, 5% on wood; 4 records on silicious rock, 3 on calcareous rock; 2 records on moss; 1 record each on bark of Pinus & Juniperus

Terricolous squamulose/fruticose lichenized fungus, photobiont a chlorococcoid alga in genus Trebouxia or Pseudotrebouxia
