Green primary thallus consisting of a small lobed squamules, marginally sorediate; podetia up to 1 cm tall, blunt or tapered, coarsely sorediate with variable corticate patches (sometimes mostly corticate); CHEMISTRY: thallus K-, PD+ red, UV- (fumarprotocetraric acid); FIELD ID: difficult, with several other powderhorn Cladonia species crowding the field; see Similar Species
Cladonia macilenta has smaller squamules and at least some red tips on podetia; C. subradiata & C. cylindrica have smaller squamules, entirely sorediate podetia that are often finely squamulose at base, may be narrowly cupped or rarely apotheciate, & the latter is UV+ blue-white; C. ochrochlora has large squamules surrounding podetia
