Gray-green to brown (depending on sun exposure) primary thallus consisting of small deeply notched or divided squamules; podetia 1-3 cm tall, corticate, made up of shallow, flat-bottomed cups ringed with brown pycnidia and occasionally squamules, proliferating from their centers and sometimes edges, both singly and in multiples of new cups, creating tiers of successive levels; FIELD ID: unmistakable, given lack of overlap with similar species
Cladonia verticillata is the only similar species, & it is found only in the mountains or occasionally on Piedmont granitic outcrops
