Description

Thallus green-olive when wet, chestnut brown dry, made up of scales 2-5 mm in diameter, round or irregular in shape; upper surface flat or contoured with soil, undersides married to soil with small, pale rhizines; centers of some scales with dark spot marking ostiole of pycnidium; in Ga., usually seen in complex with what appears to be either Spilonema revertens or the free-living cyanobacterium Stigonema; MICROSCOPY: cells of lower cortex randomly arranged (not sorted into columns); FIELD ID: requires dissection to examine characteristics of thallus
