Description

Black to olive-brown thallus with long, ruffled lobes radiating from dark center; multiple holdfasts attach lobes to rock; MICROSCOPY: perithecia globose, 0.2-0.3 mm in diameter, spores colorless, simple, less than 15 µm long; FIELD ID possible with experience, as others in this genus have different morphology

Similar Species

Dermatocarpon muhlenbergii has larger perithecia, 0.4-0.6 mm across & usually on calcareous rock; D. luridum has short over-lapping lobes
