Gray to brown thallus with lobes 0.5-3 cm in width, stippled with brown ostioles of imbedded perithecia; lower surface tan to dark brown, smooth; both sides of thallus bumpy from large perithecia pushing surfaces out; single holdfast attaches each lobe to rock; MICROSCOPY: perithecia 0.4-0.6 mm in diameter; FIELD ID possible with experience, focusing on prominence of perithecia
Dermatocarpon arenosaxi has perithecia 0.2-0.3 mm in diameter; it & D. luridum have many smaller lobes or multiple holdfasts, & are on silicious rock; on calcareous rock, D. dolomiticum has smaller, less prominent perithecia & more consistently black perithecia
