Description

Pale green-gray thallus is rimose-areolate; disks sunken to form narrow, dark craters, with raised white rims cracked radially; MICROSCOPY: spores muriform, pale to brown, 16-32 x 10-20 µm; FIELD ID possible with experience, keying in on deep black sunken apothecia surrounded by radially cracked rims

Diploschistes scruposus is often paler, the thallus lumpy, with white-rimmed black or gray disks sunken in more open craters
