White, ecorticate thallus scrawled with white lirellae, appearing as cracks or fissures in the thallus, & edged with white rims; labia usually closed or only slightly open, except younger lirellae near edges of thallus, which can have exposed gray disks; MICROSCOPY: our only Fissurina with large (up to 100 µm long), colorless, muriform spores, 1-2/ascus; CHEMISTRY: no reactions; FIELD ID: requires dissection to eliminate similar species
Fissurina illiterata is also white and ecorticate, but has small, 4-celled spores as well as smaller lirellae without showy labia; Acanthothecis species are closest in appearance of thallus & spores, but have ornamented paraphyses (sometimes difficult to see) & usually react with K+ or PD+
