Description

Pale green or whitish thallus with orange disks; disks even with smooth rims, crowded, merging on contact; never sorediate; MICROSCOPY: sinuous, colorless spores consistently 6-7-celled in maturity; CHEMISTRY: disk K+ deep burgundy-red (russulone); FIELD ID possible with experience; note differences with H. rufidulum (see Similar Species), & take caution that species with haematommone can appear to have orange disks when wet

Similar Species

Other Haematomma species with russulone include H. rufidulum, which is rarely white-sorediate, has mature spores with more cells, & has more prominent rims sometimes raised above the level of disks & often beaded or verruculose (see key below)
