Green or gray lobes with marginal whitish soralia on reflexed lobe tips, the soralia not much wider than the lobes; undersides ecorticate, white or with narrow yellow patches near lobe tips; dark rhizines with long side branches; CHEMISTRY: if present, yellow pigment K-; FIELD ID: requires careful observation to separate from several similar congeners
Heterodermia galactophylla has more short side-lobes, short side-branches on pale rhizines, & its soralia are noticeably wider than narrow, delicate lobes; other Heterodermia with reflexed terminal soralia have undersides either corticate or ecorticate & more thoroughly pigmented

Mesic hardwood forest, mixed pine – hardwood woodland; substrates: mostly hardwood bark, about half Quercus & half other hardwoods; 1 record on moss over Juniperus & 1 on silicious rock
