Pale gray, shiny thallus with broad, overlapping lobes or narrow, dissected, spaced lobes, the latter form much more common in Ga. (broad-lobed form restricted to mts.?); isidia of widely varying lengths, with longer isidia the norm on narrow-lobed form, & short isidia brown-tipped; underside white to tan, with white rhizines; CHEMISTRY: cortex & medulla K+ deep yellow; FIELD ID: with experience, unmistakable; look for whitish, glossy lobes, isidia, & pale undersides
Parmeliopsis subambigua also has narrow lobes & is often on conifers, but it is yellower, has pustules/soredia rather than isidia, & is chemically different; isidiate Hypotrachyna species have dark undersides
