Tan-pink to rusty, rimose to continuous thallus with rusty orange, sunken disks; disks often concolorous with thallus and difficult to see; extensive thalli can be mistaken for rusty mud on rock; CHEMISTRY: all reactions negative; MICROSCOPY: epihymenium is reddish & inspersed with granules;FIELD ID: unmistakable with a close look, keying in on sunken orange disks
Caloplaca cinnabarina also has immersed orange disks, but disks & thallus are much brighter orange, it occurs on drier rocks, & its thallus is K+ purple
