Pale green thallus with rich brown apothecia (rarely pale), contrasting sharply with thick, persistently white rims, those often with a fuzzy or powdery surface; disk surface clean, without pruina; older disk rims can become crenate & disks folded; chemistry: thallus + yellow; microscopy: amphithecium with small crystals
Lecanora chlarotera can have almost as sharp a contrast between white rims and brown disks, but maturity causes its rims to dull and become slightly beaded, & the surface of its disks are lightly dusted with pruina usually visible in magnification (dissection may be necessary to confirm this); while observing cross-section, note this species’ large crystals in amphithecium
