Habitat Summary for element in Georgia: Small-stream swamp forest

Description

Pale green-gray thallus continuous to rimose-areolate; disks reddish-brown, with thick, white ecorticate rims, remaining smooth (“unbeaded”) into maturity; exciple visible as brown ring surrounding disk just inside white rim; disks fairly small, 0.5-1 mm in diameter; CHEMISTRY: thallus K+ red (norstictic acid); MICROSCOPY: epihymenium brown (pigment dissolving in KOH wet mount), amphithecium with fine crystals in polarized light; FIELD ID: possible with field K test, though should be confirmed with dissection due to extreme rarity

Similar Species

Other bark Lecanora with brown disks: L. chlarotera has white rims (especially when young), but has a thin pruina on apothecia & large crystals in amphithecium (not in swamps in lower Coastal Plain); L. hybocarpa (abundant in same habitat) has corticate, often beaded rims, & large crystals in amphithecium; neither of these species has a noticeable excipular ring between disk & rim, or thallus that reacts K+ red
