Thin, whitish thallus dispersed areolate, verrucose; black disks with rims flat when young, becoming convex and appearing rimless later; CHEMISTRY: thallus K+ yellow; MICROSCOPY: epihymenium green or blue-green, exciple blue-gray, hypothecium dark yellow-brown, spores colorless, simple, 8/ascus; FIELD ID: requires dissection to sort from other black-dot crusts

Similar Species

Other Lecidea/Lecidella species; Buellia species, superficially (spores different); Lecidella stigmatea also has a blue-green epihymenium but its hypothecium is usually colorless to pale yellowish-brown (can be a judgement call)
