Gray-brown to gray thallus, lobes about 0.5-1 mm wide, inner thallus covered with thick cylindrical isidia standing up from thallus; lower surface mostly attached, without a cortex; thallus rimmed & underlain by dense black prothallus; apothecia not seen; FIELD ID: grayer color & cylindrical isidia are key characters

Similar Species

Parmeliella appalachensis is brown & has lobules; Parmeliella pannosa is more lobulate, browner, & restricted to the Coastal Plain, with little to no overlap in range

Mesic hardwood forests, mostly on Quercus bark; 1 record on ultramafic rock (dunite)
