Description

Relatively small, green-gray thallus of strongly fluted lobes with undersides brown at lobe edges (black in center); all but newest lobes edged with greenish soralia; lobes non-ciliate; CHEMISTRY: medulla/soralia K-, KC-, C-, PD-, UV- (no substances reactive to spot tests); FIELD ID requires a KC test to medulla to sort from P. gardneri

Similar Species

Parmotrema austrosinense is larger with white undersides and KC+, C+ red medulla; P. gardneri is similar but its medulla is KC+ pink, PD+ red (see key below)

Woodlands, forests & swamps; substrates: hardwood bark: 34% Quercus & 42% other hardwoods or unknowns; conifer bark: 9% Pinus, 6% Taxodium & 5 records on Juniperus; 5 records on silicious rock & 1 on wooden shingles
