Habitat Summary for element in Georgia: Mesic hardwood forests and swamps

Description

Pale green to yellow-green thallus of 0.5-1-cm-wide lobes; undersides brown & without rhizines at lobe edges, black in center; old lobes with abundant isidia on surface and along margins, sparsely ciliate at tips, cylindrical to branched; lobes ciliate at margins; CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, KC+ gold (usnic acid); 2 chemical races distinguished by medullary chemistry: all reactions negative (no substances), or K-, KC+ red, C+ pink, PD, UV- (gyrophoric acid); FIELD ID: a field K test to medulla will help sort big isidiate/ciliate ruffles, especially if light is too bright to make a UV test easy

Similar Species

Other isidiate Parmotrema have K+ yellow cortex & most are gray; P. ultralucens is also sometimes greenish-yellow, at least in part, but has K+ red, UV+ yellow medulla (see key below)
