Habitat Summary for element in Georgia: Mesic forests
Gray thallus with moderately broad (1-2.5 cm), glossy lobes, only moderately ruffled; large brown to reddish-brown apothecia at lobe tips held relatively flat, not vertical, curled or saddle-shaped; undersides with dark (on inner part & some outer lobes), fuzzy veins often pale or indistinct on outer lobes; rhizines often organized into concentric rings; FIELD ID: if very fertile, the flat apothecia make this lichen unmistakable
Peltigera neopolydactyla is often larger, with lobes up to 2.5 cm across, & has a broad pale area on underside of most lobe tips, with dark veins on older parts; P. polydactylon is similar in size with dark veins reaching to tips of lobes; both these species have saddle-shaped apothecia & rhizines randomly distributed along veins
