Gray thallus with lobes broad (1-2.5 cm), glossy lobes; lobes have ruffled or crisped margins; large brown to reddish-brown apothecia held vertically at lobe tips curled into saddle shape; undersides with dark veins separated by pale ovals, with a broad pale area on underside of most lobe tips & dark veins on older parts; rhizines randomly distributed along veins; FIELD ID: measure lobes to confirm, & study underside, with this species having the more dramatic dark-&-white pattern & often white marginal zones (see photo below)
Peltigera polydactylon is usually a bit smaller, with lobes up to 1.5 cm across, & veins often reach mature lobes tips where they merge into solid brown zone; P. horizontalis is also smaller & its apothecia are usually flat & round or oval, & its rhizines are generally organized into horizontal bands on undersides
