Pale gray, continuous thallus variably lumpy; apothecia within steep-sided warts with multiple ostioles at summit, ostioles gray; MICROSCOPY: spores ellipsoid, colorless to brownish-greenish, simple, inner wall smooth/unornamented, 2/ascus [Note: some keys say nothing about ornamentation or lack of it on this species’ spores; only Brodo (2016) clearly states that this species has smooth inner cell walls, but there may be some ambiguity in this character (this author has two specimens that key to this species in other keys, but have ornamented spores)]; CHEMISTRY: medulla K+ red, PD+ yellow to orange (norstictic acid), cortex UV-; FIELD ID not possible, requires chemical tests & dissection to examine spores
Pertusaria subpertusa is very similar, but has medulla K-, PD+ red; P. macounii has medulla K+ yellow to orange-yellow
