Pale blue-green-gray, matte thallus of narrow lobes (0.5-1.5 mm wide), often forming small rosettes; mounded pale soralia dot older parts of thallus, on lobe surfaces; corticate lower surface is white to pale tan, with pale rhizines; FIELD ID: the pale soralia on a neat blue-green thallus is usually easy to identify in the field, taking care to eliminate Similar Species

Similar Species

Physcia atrostriata has marginal green soralia and fuzzy-pruinose lobe edges; P. crispa is marginally sorediate, & has broader lobes; P. clementei is rare, & its soralia form from large pustules; P. sorediosa has a dark lower surface at center, & soredia that form at margins & creep onto upper surface irregularly

In forested habitats; substrates: hardwood bark: 21% Quercus, 15% Carya, 12% Acer & 34% other hardwoods or unknowns; conifer bark: 7% Taxodium, 6% Juniperus & 1 record on Pinus; 2 records on moss over bark; 5 records from limestone or concrete & 2 from silicious rock; 1 record on wood shingles, & 1 from metal farm equipment
