Pale green-gray, matte (but never pruinose or fuzzy) thallus of relatively broad lobes (1-2 mm wide), with crisped or ruffly edges; pale soralia form mostly along edges but also dot older parts of lobe surfaces; corticate lower surface is white to pale tan, with pale rhizines; FIELD ID: large size, solid lobe tips, shape of soralia & underside color should all be observed
Physcia americana is smaller and has mounded soralia on lobe surfaces, not margins; P. atrostriata has marginal green soralia and fuzzy-pruinose lobe edges; P. clementei has soralia forming from pustules; P. sorediosa has a dark lower surface at center, & finer-sorediate soralia that form at margins & creep onto upper surface irregularly
