Pale gray or green (wet), smooth thallus of narrow, convex lobes (0.5-1 mm wide), often forming small rosettes; mounded pale soralia form along margins, encroaching irregularly onto lobe surfaces, soredia fine; corticate lower surface is white at edges, black toward center; FIELD ID: focus on smooth lobes & large irregular soralia with fine granules, & check underside color
Physcia americana has mounded, round soralia restricted to lobe surfaces, slightly coarser soredia; P. atrostriata has marginal green soralia & fuzzy-pruinose lobe edges; P. crispa is also marginally sorediate, & has broader lobes; P. clementei is rare, & its soralia form from large pustules
