Pale gray, minutely lumpy to granular primary thallus; podetia vary in height, appearing inflated, with smooth, rounded tops & a small brown tip at apex; podetia occasionally branched or with multiple brown tips; FIELD ID: thalli are variable, but if podetia are well developed, this species is unmistakable
Cladonia have a primary thallus made up of squamules, & tips of podetia rarely rounded with brown tips (C. caroliniana can be slightly similar, but it has no primary thallus & multiple short pale bumps or thorns at tips of podetia)
