Description

Greenish-gray to tan thallus; solitary black perithecia with apical ostioles, with variable thalline covering over base of warts but always with some black exposed at apex; MICROSCOPY: hymenium clear (not inspersed with oil droplets) & staining orange in iodine solution, spores brown, 4-celled, lacking a gelatinous sheath with dark caps, spores 27-38 x 12-18 µm; CHEMISTRY: thallus UV-; FIELD ID: dissection recommended

Similar Species

Pyrenula caryae is similar, but it is rare & primarily on hickories, its thallus is UV+ yellow, & its spores have a gelatinous sheath with brown terminal caps; P. pseudobufonia is UV+ yellow & its hymenium is inspersed with oil droplets; P. subelliptica is virtually identical but its hymenium is inspersed with oil droplets & the spore lumina are differently shaped
