Description

Gray thallus matte, thick, continuous, filled with crystals, broadly lumpy and sometimes separating from substrate with air pockets beneath; isidia often sparse, occasionally abundant, thick, cylindrical, sometimes lying on thallus or bending over surreally toward ground as if pendulous, at first globose but growing up to 5 mm long; large, irregular, erumpent, gray-pruinose apothecia surrounded by jagged thalline margin (apothecia sometimes absent); MICROSCOPY: spores brown, submuriform; CHEMISTRY: no reactions to spot tests or UV (no substances); FIELD ID possible if isidia present, especially if bent; if isidia not detected, dissection needed to examine spores

Similar Species

Thelotrema dilatatum has similar disks, but with a dense white pruina, & the thallus is not isidiate
