Pale green-gray thallus, thick, corticate; apothecia 0.1 mm or less in diameter, deeply sunken in black pits; edges of pits abrupt, exciple separating from pit walls in many cases, appearing as thin lines running across pits; pockets of red or magenta crystals in medulla; MICROSCOPY: spores brown, submuriform, cells 4 x 1-2, (4-)8/ascus, about 20 x 14 µm; CHEMISTRY: thallus K-, PD-, but magenta crystals K+ purple; FIELD ID: requires dissection to sort from closely related genera
