Greenish to gray thallus rimose to continuous & smooth; disks brown to almost black, usually with a thin, pale, irregular thalline margin; young apothecia may first appear as white dots on thallus; MICROSCOPY: apothecia with a short, broad, colorless stipe below, spores simple, colorless, 8/ascus, about 14-25 x 7-13 µm; CHEMISTRY: thallus KC+, C+ reddish (gyrophoric acid); FIELD ID not possible; requires examination under a dissecting scope at least to sort reproductive structures; a look at the spores may also be useful
Trapelia glebulosa is areolate, sometimes lobed at edges, & apothecia have no stipe at base in cross-section; T. stipitata has concentric brown layers of exciple visible at disk edges, & in cross-section shows an elongate, colorless stipe at base of disk
