Greenish to gray thallus rimose-areolate; disks dark brown, some showing concentric brown layers of exciple at edges; disks can appear to perch on a pedestal of thallus; MICROSCOPY: apothecia with an elongate, relatively long, colorless stipe below, spores simple, colorless, 8/ascus, about 16-17 x 6.5-9.5 µm; CHEMISTRY: thallus KC+, C+ reddish (gyrophoric acid); FIELD ID not possible; requires dissection to examine spores & structures beneath apothecia
Trapelia glebulosa is areolate, sometimes lobed at edges, & apothecia have no stipe at base in cross-section; T. coarctata has a short, broad stipe at its base, & a more continuous thallus
