Description

Green-gray to chestnut brown, smooth thallus composed of a single sheet radiating from the single umbilicus; thalli in undisturbed areas reaching 30 cm in length (thalli usually longer than wide), often with torn or ragged edges; holes in thalli show black tissues beneath/within; underside mostly a dense mat of short black hairs

Similar Species

Lasallia species have bulbous, convex warts on upper surface & undersides without dark hairs; Umbilicaria muhlenbergii has pits & depressions often with black apothecia
