Description

Brown thallus composed of a single sheet radiating from the single umbilicus, & reaching 15-20 cm in diameter; upper surface with pits or depressions, often with black apothecia filling pits; underside brown to black, with short black hairs & plates parallel to thallus surface; FIELD ID: unmistakable with a little experience (but see Similar Species)

Similar Species

Lasallia species have bulbous, convex warts on upper surface & undersides without dark hairs; Umbilicaria mammulata has a smooth thallus, lacking pits, depressions or apothecia
