Habitat Summary for element in Georgia: Massive rock outcrops

Description

Pale yellow-green thallus adnate, often in an orderly rosette with older parts at center eventually dying & replaced with proliferating propagules; lobes 1.5-4.5 mm wide; short globular isidia abundant in older parts of thallus; apothecia absent to common; underside black; CHEMISTRY: medulla K+ yellow (to orangish), PD+ orange (stictic acid complex); FIELD ID: taking care to note underside color & presence of isidia then conducting a field K test to medulla, ID can still be subjective, based on thallus habit (see Similar Species)

Similar Species

Xanthoparmelia isidiascens has isidia & black undersides & is virtually identical chemically, but is less adnate to rock, with narrow lobes climbing over one another, creating a jumble rather than a neat rosette

Related Rare Species

Xanthoparmelia hypomelaena, X. isidiascens, X. piedmontensis
