Greenish-gray smooth thallus, with perithecia grouped in buff-orange, slightly raised tissue (pseudostroma) with only black ostioles visible; edges of pseudostroma low-profile, gently sloping to thallus, sometimes lined white; MICROSCOPY: hymenium clear, spores pale brown, (2-)3-septate, endospore poorly developed, cells globose to cuboidal or lens-shaped, 25-35 x 10-11 µm; CHEMISTRY: orange pseudostromal pigment K+ purple (anthraquinone), UV+ bright orange (xanthone?), thallus UV-; FIELD ID possible with experience, but chemical & UV tests & dissection recommended
Trypethelium subeluteriae also has perithecia grouped in orange-pigmented pseudostroma, but they are elevated from thallus & steep-sided, not low profile; its spores are colorless & larger, with more cells
