White, ecorticate thallus scrawled with white lirellae, fairly long and branching, appearing as cracks or fissures in the thallus, & edged with white rims; labia usually closed or only slightly open; MICROSCOPY: spores colorless, muriform, cells about 4-5 x 1-3(?), about 18 x 11 µm; CHEMISTRY: no substances or spot-test reactions; FIELD ID: requires dissection to examine spores
Fissurina illiterata is very similar, but has small, septate spores; F. cypressi is similar but has bolder lirellae often open, exposing gray-pruinose disks, & large, muriform spores
