Thallus gray or gray-brown when dry, dark gray when damp, lobe margins curled upward, lobe surfaces with fuzzy tomentum, especially near edges; undersides white with raised veins; apothecia sometimes produced on small vertical lobes, brown, flat to saddle-shaped; FIELD ID: a close look with a hand lens may be needed to see tomentum on upper surface, & confirm lack of soralia or lobules
Peltigera didactyla can also be tomentose on upper surface, but it is also sorediate; P. praetextata is tomentose along upper lobe edges, but it has lobules along edges & cracks; other species in Ga. have a smooth upper surface
